Mark Tewkesbury
Swimming

Mark began his competitive swimming career at the age of eight, he then went on to become the University of Calgary's star swimmer and joined the Canadian national team in 1984. In 1988, Mark competed in his first Olympics in Seoul, winning the silver medal as part of the Canadian team in the 4 x 100 meter medley relay.

By the time the 1992 Barcelona Olympics came around, Mark had claimed the silver medal at the 1991 World Championships in Perth, Australia, as well as four Commonwealth Gold medals. In Barcelona, not only did he win the Gold in the 100M Backstroke, he also shaved over one second off the Olympic record with a time of 00:53:98! He immediately became a national hero, giving Canada its first Gold at the 1992 Olympic Games.

Mark was named the male nominee to run for the International Olympic Committee's Athlete Commission which was voted on by the athletes at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He is currently a member of the Olympic Committee's Site Selection Commission and is the author of Visions of Excellence: The Art of Achieving your Dreams.
