In January 2000, Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo defeated the world number one (Martina Hingis) and number two (Lindsay Davenport) in the Sydney International - the official Olympic test tournament. Later in the same month she was eliminated at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Mauresmo, formerly the world's leading junior player, turned professional in 1998 and is the world number ten in the senior ranks.
